Hello readers, and welcome to issue #001 of my new newsletter, The Cartoon Church. Greetings if you’re a subscriber to my former CartoonChurch mailing list, a Diagram Club member, or have received this owing to a terrible admin error. Welcome, and I hope you enjoy it.
Lengthy introductory preamble
As I explained last time, The Cartoon Church is my second Substack newsletter, started because:
Some of you like my church cartoons, and there’s quite a lot of them that I could send out to you.
I’ve been quite enjoying using Substack (much more than the other newsletter suppliers I’ve been using up to now).
I’m hoping it will help me as I work on new cartoons for the Church Times.
I’m planning to showcase cartoons from my CartoonChurch.com website, which is an important part of being able to make my living.
If you’d like to know more about my thinking and plans for this newsletter you can read The Cartoon Church About page.
Cartoon of the week
Can you have a cartoon of the week in a not-strictly-weekly newsletter? Not sure, but anyway, one titled ‘Welcome’ seemed apt.
This cartoon originally appeared in the Church Times and the book ‘How to Avoid the Peace’, published by Canterbury Press. It’s available for reuse in your own church magazine or elsewhere by buying a licence - all details here.
Church Times cartoon snippet
Eagle-eyed readers of the CT may have noticed that my cartoons are back, after a bit of a break for one reason or another. This is just a minuscule segment of the whole thing - you’ll find the entire first one here: Targets. There’s a paywall, but you do get a couple of free articles. But don’t just rush headlong into reading my cartoon as your free thing though - what if something better comes up? Hmmm? Worth thinking about.
Additional cartoon of the week
‘Archaeology - what we found when we dug down’. Originally published in the Church Times, and then my book Peculiar Goings On, published by Canterbury Press. You can find this diagram on the CartoonChurch.com website, here.
Letters / complaints
It’s too early to have received any really, but please do write to me. You should be able to comment on the website (cartoonchurch.substack.com) or by replying to this email (if you are reading this as an email). Make sense? Quite probably not. But we’ll pick it up between us.
I particularly welcome:
Questions
Suggestions for cartoon topics you would or would not like me to cover
Quibbling / complaints
I aim to reply to all messages, but please bear with me as I’m about to take some time off.
Announcements / apologies / clarifications / that sort of thing
How you can support this newsletter
Become a paid Cartoon Church licence-holder - this funds this newsletter, and allows you to use cartoonchurch.com cartoons in your church publications.
(Yes, I know the terminology is currently confusing - I’m working on it.)
Advert for my other newsletter
Diagram Club is sent out weekly, and contains my non-church specific work. Including Household Problems, cycling cartoons, annotated photos, cafe updates, colour of the week, and other regular features. Click this big orange button to subscribe, or, at the very least, have a gander.
The Dave Walker Shop
I have a shop, which at the moment is mainly my cycling-themed cartoons on t-shirts and mugs and things like that. Ideal for anyone who likes cycling and/or my cartoons on the topic. You’ll find the shop, and photos of me modelling t-shirts in the disused bus lane, here: The Dave Walker Shop.
(Current shop offers: £5 off any order over £70 with the code FIVEOFF from now until midnight on 10th November (GMT).* Plus, all orders over £50 qualify for free UK shipping - no time limit to that one.)
Bit of a delay until the next one
No newsletter next week as I’m taking some time off (you’ve said that). But I’ll send the next one in a few weeks’ time.
Thank you for reading everyone. Hope you’ve enjoyed it. Please comment or reply. Speak to you soon,
Dave
When we took out the pews the main detritus found was numerous hearing aid batteries!
Well that was a faff getting 'permission' to leave a comment! What I wanted to say is that the new Newsletters are working smoothly - with effective links. Might have to revise that after I have thought about ir!
